Hi all, so S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is now officially released. DISCLAIMER: Now, before I carry on with this post, please do not shoot the messenger. I have not personally played the game and have no plans to as yet, due to financial difficulties. So what I am posting here are other's opinions. The mere fact that the game even made it to release in spite of COVID and the war in Ukraine is in itself a miracle and testament to the dedication of the GSC development team, so endless kudos to them. OK, with that, so far, the general consensus is that although it looks promising, there are too many bugs and glitches, it does not look as polished as it could be and the storyline takes forever to start developing and unfolding. Here is just one example of a review on Youtube: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] There are many others so I will leave it at that. As stated I have not played the game so I cannot comment on any issues. Enjoy, all.
I am now some 18 hours in to Stalker 2 and I am really enjoying it. Exploring new areas without prior knowledge of what lies ahead is refreshing, and finding a new weapon in some well-hidden stash brings a real feeling of accomplishment.
This is very recognisably a 'Stalker' game, and many areas will be familiar to players of Stalkersoup. It does seem harder than the earlier games, and even on Normal mode I am struggling against some of the mutants - which, imo, are both tougher and faster than their predecessors. Quick-save is definitely your friend, and saving often is advised!
My only real complaint so far is with the menus. Some choices revert to default each time I start the game, and changing keybinds to my preferred keys is not as straightforward as I would like. It also insists on compiling shaders on every game launch, which can be a slow process. I also have to unplug my joysticks before playing, as otherwise the game thinks I have a controller and doesn't give me any keyboard/mouse options at all.
Having said that, once I am in the game all is forgiven. So far (touch wood) I haven't had any major bugs, and gameplay has for the most part been pretty smooth. In true Stalker-game tradition it is certainly not bug-free, but most of the worst issues that early-access reviewers have been reporting seem to have been fixed in the released game, and no doubt more patches will follow. I wouldn't call it a tripple-A game (some of the graphics, especially NPC faces, do look a bit dated compared with some other recent releases), but the environment is beautiful, anomalies look suitably dangerous, and enemies are challenging.
Bottom line: Stalker 2 on release is admittedly buggy, but in my opinion it is well worth the money especially if you are a Stalker fan. All in all, I think Stalker 2 will tide me over nicely until the promised Stalkersoup update arrives. Hi pchester, regarding your unplugging your joysticks for Stalker 2, do you use joysticks with Stalkersoup please, do you use any similar alternatives to keyboard and mouse please? I look forwards to your reply. Thanks and Regards TrueB |

Hi Trueb. No, I use mouse & keyboard for all games except flight/spaceflight games. For these I use either twin joysticks or joystick-and-throttle depending on the game. Twin-joysticks are ideal for spaceflight games where you need control over the "6-degrees of freedom" - i.e. movement forward/backward, left/right and up/down; and rotation about any axis. | |

Hi pchester, that is certainly a relief, I mistakenly thought they might be needed to play Stalker 2. Phew. . 6 degrees of freedom sounds amazing. Many thanks for letting me know. Best Regards TrueB |
