Possible really stupid question

Hi all, So I am quite far into the game, having just completed level 0 and I have just now noticed something and I am unsure what it is indicating, so here goes. What is the little white spanner indicated on some weapons in my inventory?
Is that to indicate upgrade options or to indicate it needs repairs?

It means that the weapon has been modified / enhanced one way or another so it has improved characteristics over it's vanilla version.
The description shown with the weapon selected in your inventory usually includes details of these additions.

Wow, I didn't know that!

I've just noticed the difference between the white upgrade arrow, and the white upgrade spanner

So the spanner indicates a professionally upgraded weapon, and the arrow indicates that you've had your weapon customised by Lanky
