Looking at the walk through there's an item about 'switch distance' in the
'alife.ltx file , is that still current or has it been cured.

I vaguely remember the term, but I can't remember what it does. What does the walkthrough say about it?

It's been cured. Used to have to increase switch distance to get Boatswain to return, but not for several patches now.
